The Embr Wave® is a revolutionary thermal wearable that delivers powerful waves of heating or cooling sensations to relieve hot flashes. The team at Nova was asked to design the 2nd generation device - the main task was to evolve the first-generation Wave into a smaller, more wearable, more powerful package for users.
The Challenge
Thermal sensations are more powerful and instantaneous than other modes of touch. They provide a unique pathway to your brain helping to create a shift in how you feel physically and emotionally.
Wave 2’s smaller, rounded profile and redesigned fitted wrist strap makes it comfortable to wear around the clock without inhibiting movement. Plus, Wave 2’s smaller size enables wearers to control their temperature more discreetly, addressing requests from users seeking to camouflage the device’s purpose. We conducted user research to make sure the device was big enough to provide enough contact with the skin to transfer the temperature sessions but not too large that users wouldn’t want to wear it.
Our Solution
Studies conducted in partnership with Johnson & Johnson showed that women wearing the Wave experienced significantly fewer hot flashes that interfered with sleep and felt greater control over hot flashes. Study participants reported a 168% improvement in hot flash control and a 28% reduction in sleep onset latency (i.e., time it takes to fall asleep) as well as an overall increase in nighttime sleep. Since hitting the market Embr has only seen success and growth. They have received a variety of design and health awards for the Wave 2 product.
